CHATEAU DE CHANTORE

What better way to view Mont Saint Michel’s graceful charms than from the balcony of your bedroom? Open the window and Chantore’s manicured parkland frames a unique view of the citadel island, only ten miles or so across the bay. The chateau has five luxury bedrooms, impeccably furnished in opulent 18th-century style. And there’s a delightful little cottage – the Orangerie – perfect for small groups of friends or family.

The house was built in 1780 by the Lord of Chantore, who chose the site for its elevated position and privileged views of Mont Saint Michel abbey. He also planted fifty acres of beautiful parkland, landscaped in the English style. Today, swans glide across the mirrored surface of the lake, and a meandering stream trickles its way over waterfalls and through a canopy of exotic trees, bamboo and rhododendron. Apple orchards provide the property’s excellent hard cider; black horses graze the rich Normandy grass.

Chateau de Chantore is one of Normandy’s hidden charms, and Inaki and Bernard – the suave and genial hosts – will make you feel at home in this most romantic of chateau getaways. Inaki, originally from the Basque region, swapped his career in the world of Parisian haute-couture for the chateau life. Previously a biologist, Bernard now restores antique furnishings and looks after the chateau’s Friesian horses. Together they are the custodians of the area’s most luxurious and charming destination.
